The EU packaging regulation (PPWR) comes into force on August 12, 2026. It specifies packaging design requirements for food producers that promote recyclability. It also stipulates binding minimum quotas for recyclates in plastic packaging: PET drinks bottles, for example, are to consist of 30% recyclate from 2030. Food packaging made from other plastics must contain 10% recyclate. Where this should come from has not yet been clarified. The PPWR also wants to tighten the thumbscrews when it comes to choosing sustainable packaging materials. Manufacturers of packaging materials and machines have been working flat out on innovative solutions for years and will be showcasing them at Interpack in May.
